We will establish liaisons with regional NGOs and hospitals in New Delhi , Bangalore and Behrampur. Our collaborating hospitals and NGOs in each city will send their trained health care workers to the local villages to survey the rural population and advertise our mobile camps. They will conduct a door to door survey and make a list of patients with neurological disorders. Thereafter, on a monthly basis fully equipped mobile units will take medical residents and at least one neurologist to the villages to screen patients for neurological disease for further treatment. The medical residents will continue to visit the patients on a weekly basis for follow-up care. At the completion of each visit our health care personnel will provide health education classes for the rural population. Additionally, we will provide medication to those suffering from neurological disorders and bring those with severe neurological conditions back to the city for further treatment. In the initial phase we plan to focus on the following neurological diseases:

Epilepsy:

Epilepsy is the most common of brain disorders. Characterized by repeated seizures or "fits" which range from the shortest lapse in attention to severe, frequent convulsions. The seizures are caused by bursts of excessive electrical activity in the brain. An estimated 50 million people of all ages around the world are affected by epilepsy; 5.7 people per thousand in cities and 12 people per thousand in rural areas.

Epilepsy in itself is a taboo in India . According to Ayurveda epilepsy occurs when equilibrium is lost due to the consumption of unclean food, not following dietary rules, or when ingredients with contradictory properties are eaten together. This imbalance occurs when negative emotions enter the heart (it is thought to be the location of the soul and the sense organs) and create an increase in emotions, thus causing a seizure.

Infectious Disease:

Neurocysticercosis is the most common parasitic disease of the central nervous system; one out of 50 Indians have been exposed to the tapeworm that causes this disease.

Cerebral Malaria accounts for 10 % of P. falciparum cases in India . Japanese Encephalitis has caused 1500 cases with 344 being fatal in India .

Stroke:

Stroke can be caused either by a clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain or by a blood vessel rupturing and preventing blood flow to the brain.

Incidence in India is 200 out of every 100,000 people.

Dementia:

Dementia is a clinical syndrome characterized by acquired losses of cognitive and emotional abilities severe enough to interfere with daily functioning.

Nearly 3 million people in India suffer from some form of dementia with the most common being Alzheimer’s disease.

Parkinson's disease:

Parkinson’s is a movement disorder that is chronic and progressive, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. It occurs when a group of cells in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra begin to malfunction and die.

Prevalence rate of Parkinson's disease per 100,000 population is 14 in northern India , 27 in the south and 16 in the east, while it is 363 for Parsis in Mumbai.

As we progress and raise more funds we plan on purchasing specialized mobile units to provide more advanced care at the grassroots level. These vehicles will include a portable CT scanner, an advanced stroke unit, and a medical lab. If the program is successful, we will move to phase III where an advanced portable operating theater will be available to deal with more difficult operative neurological problems like brain tumors, spine problems etc.
